The National Museum is the guardian of the Philippines’ cultural heritage founded in 1901. It was formerly the center of government in Manila. It has 15 galleries which show the past and present of the Filipinos. Some of outstanding sights in the museum are the four galleries devoted to the sunken galleon of the San Diego, and the discovery of Manuggul Jar, a national treasure.
The National Museum is also the home of the “Spolarium” the renowned life-size painting made by Juan Luna. The painting is said to be a representation of Filipino’s slavery and sacrifice during the Spanish period. Aside from the painting being an award winning piece, it also inspired Nationalistic spirit among the people including the Philippines’ national hero Jose Rizal.
Other award winning painters like Hidalgo are also featured in the museum. Artifacts, coins, jewellery, porcelain plates and more can be explored. The National Museum is situated in Padre Burgos Street, near Rizal Park. Art enthusiast and history buff will surely enjoy a tour around the National Museum. It is a must see visit for tourist!
